Trauma with ASD, ADHD, OCD, AuDHD and other forms of ND.
It is common for ND Neuro divergent clients to suffer from complex trauma or developmental trauma. Indeed a sub category of complex trauma (C-PTSD) that effects such clients is called invalidation trauma.
Dealing with the combination of being neuro divergent and a trauma survivor requires the therapist to have in depth knowledge of both areas, and their cross over as co morbidity.
Stuart is a certified specialist in multiple areas, and has separate certifications in: complex trauma, Neuro-divergence, Autism, ADHD and the specific co morbidity of ND clients with C-PTSD.
Stuart is himself a C-PTSD survivor and has been assessed as a late diagnosis ASD and ADHD ND person, who also has dyslexia. As such he is both a highly qualified specialist, and someone with personal life experience. As someone with a partner who is also ND, he also has personal life experience of ND relationships.
Complex PTSD (C-PTSD) and Neurodivergence: Condition Overview
Complex PTSD (C-PTSD) arises from prolonged, repeated trauma (often interpersonal and childhood-based) where escape is difficult or impossible. It includes core PTSD symptoms—intrusive memories, avoidance, and hypervigilance—alongside three "disturbances in self-organization": severe emotional dysregulation, chronic negative self-worth, and profound relationship difficulties.
Neurodivergence (ASD and ADHD) refers to variations in neurological development. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is characterized by differences in social communication, sensory processing, and restricted or repetitive patterns of behavior. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is defined by inattention, impulsivity, hyperactivity, and executive dysfunction.
The Intersection: Neurodivergent individuals are significantly more vulnerable to experiencing trauma and developing C-PTSD. Furthermore, C-PTSD and neurodivergence often amplify each other. For example, trauma-induced hypervigilance can mimic or exacerbate ADHD-related distractibility, and trauma-related shutdown can closely resemble autistic burnout or withdrawal. Because neurodivergent nervous systems process stress differently, standard trauma therapies often require specific accommodations (e.g., sensory adjustments, pacing, and concrete language) to be effective.
While research explicitly combining RCTs for C-PTSD and neurodivergence is still a growing field, evidence supports adapting established trauma-focused therapies to accommodate neurodivergent cognitive and sensory profiles.

The Framework of the overall therapy is even more essential than usual in cases of ND with C-PTSD, and a salutogenic approach using coaching methods to enable and empower within the gold standard 3 stage process is recommended (see the pages on trauma treatment methods).
